Pictures of Sun Dogs and Other New Experiences

Living in the Northeast after 50 years in Southern California has been full of brand new experiences. Humidity was the first one. In Los Angeles we rarely experience rain in the summer. And on the rare occasion that it does rain during the summer, it is as a result of a low pressure weather pattern which brings with it cooler temperatures. Not here. Hot rain is what you get. Go figure. But as a friend pointed out to me, I do get fireflies… They’re pretty new too. I have seen them before but not like I did here during my first summer in Western Massachusetts.

Then there was the Autumn – an absolute explosion of colors! Everywhere I looked, reds, yellows, oranges, purples and everything in between. It was the classic mouth hanging open in wonder kind of experience. Every weekend, my girl @elizlaprade) and I would venture out in search of trees a’chagin… Our journeys took us all over Massachusetts and into Vermont and New Hampshire. On top of hill sides and forests erupting in color, we found some other great spots, antique stores, brew pubs, walks in the forest… Great stuff and all new.

Now it’s winter and while I have spent time before in the winter, this year has brought new experiences. Take the last week, we had a wind free temperature of -15 degrees (f), 8 inches of snow, rain on the snow and yet more sub-zero temperatures – for the uninitiated, that means everything is icy. I’m not talking about the practically microscopic layer of frost that I would sometimes see on the front lawn some mornings growing up in Southern California. This is ice, like chip it off the driveway and make margaritas for everyone kind of ice…

Winter Treat Wednesday = #SunDogs

This leads me to a winter phenomenon that I first heard of a few weeks ago – the sun dog. I am yet to see one first hand but nevertheless they have WOW FACTOR!

The scientific name for sun dog or sundog is parhelion. Sun dogs may appear as a colored patch of light to the left or right of the sun, 22° distant and at the same distance above the horizon as the sun, and in ice halos. Sun Dogs are caused by ice crystals, acting as tiny prisms bending (refracting) light from the sun. Because they act like prisms, most of the time you can see rainbow colors in the bright spots. It is fairly common to see one or both spots on either side of the sun.

As a result of the super cold “Arctic Vortex” weather pattern that forced my San Francisco 40ers to play in sub-zero weather in the arctic tundra of Lambeau Field, sun dogs have been showing up all across the northern part of the U.S. and Canada. Instagram is alive with pictures of sun dogs.
